South Surrey Holiday Season And Local Events
The holidays can be stressful, so our team at South Surrey Chiropractic and Wellness have got six tips to support you in having a calm, stress-free and enjoyable holiday season, including a list of free, fun local events and activities. December and January are busy months with many holiday celebrations across cultures all around the world. Some of these holidays include:
- Hanukkah
- Christmas
- Three Kings Day
- Winter Solstice
- St. Lucia Day
- St. Nicholas Day
- Kwanzaa
- New Year
- Orthodox Christmas and New Year
- Chinese New Year
Our feelings about the holidays are very personal. They can cause us to feel happy, sad or a mix of feelings. The holidays can also cause stress because of:
- Overscheduling, overindulging and overspending
- Too much time with family or not enough
- Multiple caregiving roles
- Personal or family illness
- Work demands
- Expectations of what you should do
- Seasonal affective disorder, anxiety or depression
What can we do to minimize the stress? It all starts with good choices. Hang on to your healthy habits. It’s OK to indulge a little but overdoing it only adds to feelings of stress and guilt. Keeping to your regular healthy habits and including healthy fruits, vegetables, and exercise, yoga and meditation over the holiday will make a big difference to your mental health and well being.
The following tips can help you enjoy the holidays as much as possible. Read on for more information and some fun activities and local events for kids and adults.

Take time to breathe and Stretch
One of the best ways to survive the holiday craziness, astonishingly, is as simple as TAKING A DEEP BREATH. Your mind, body and soul will thank you for remembering to take deep belly breaths, focusing on relaxation, feeling grounded and still for a few moments.
You can take a few moments on your own to lay on the bed, the couch or sit in a comfy spot. Put away your phone, close your eyes and just focus on your breath for 5-10 minutes. Do this on your own or you can even encourage your kids to join you for some quiet moments to focus on breathing.
Now, add in stretching! What happens when you stretch everyday? Regular stretching helps increase your range of motion in the joints, improves blood circulation and posture and alleviates muscular tension throughout the body.
Starting and ending your day with stretching is a great way to support your body during busy, stressful days. Check out these videos from MadFit (Maddie Lymburner – Canadian Fitness Blogger) for some good stretching and relaxation.

Take time for yourself
While it’s important to spend time with your loved ones, it’s also important that you take some time for yourself. Set aside a few minutes each day to do something that makes you happy and some moments of calm. Whether it’s reading a book, having a bath, knitting, going for a walk, watching a holiday movie (we love the cheesy holiday Hallmark movies!), yoga or meditation.
Making rest and sleep a priority, helps you feel recharged and relaxed during busy times.
Book an acupuncture, chiropractor or massage therapy appointment to give yourself some additional selfcare.
“I had pain for years and no one knew exactly why. Dr. Kam found out the cause and helped me. Chee’s accupucture took away the rest of my pain. Super team, very nice, helpful and kind.”
Enjoy the holiday lights with a drive or a walk.
One of the best parts of the holidays is seeing all the lights brighten up our homes and businesses, but sometimes it’s hard to get out there and enjoy them! Grab some hot coco, steamed milk or a tea from a local biz and go for a walk or a drive around your neighborhood to check out the lights.
If you live in an area that has an abundance of holiday lights and decorations, take advantage! Get in the car and drive around to see what neighborhoods are doing this year—or go on a walk through your area and look at all the different houses that have decked out their homes with lights and festive displays. There’s nothing like seeing all those twinkling lights after dark to put you in the holiday spirit!
